Fishing Coordinator’s Report –
It was awesome to get back out on the water for another competition this year. All week the weather forecast was looking a bit dodgy and had us wondering if the ladies would even get a chance to get rods in the water – but in true fashion, the ladies weren’t going to let a bit of rough weather spoil the fun! Patience paid off as they had to wait around until a bit more tide smoothed out the bar.
In the end 63 keen competitors across 16 boats headed out to see what they could find. That’s a great turnout for the Ladies Fishing Competition and made for a fantastic day on the water.
A big shout out to all the ladies who braved the average conditions. Luckily the fish decided to play the game and the bite was on, with most boats managing to put together a pretty decent feed for the table.
There were some solid fish landed across all three species, and the scales saw a few impressive weights come through. That meant some very happy anglers heading up to collect some great prizes.
Our major sponsors were Tanenuiarangi Manawatu Charitable Trust. Their fishing crew aboard Tauira seemed to have the secret formula sorted — maybe it was the special bait and burley working its magic? They managed to scoop up a few nice prizes and helped add to the great atmosphere at the prizegiving. Plenty of laughs, big smiles and a few fishing tales getting slightly better with every retelling.
I had four ladies on board Double Strike, and we had an absolute cracker of a day with plenty of laughs along the way. After boating 30 snapper, I decided that was about the limit of filleting I was prepared to tackle for the afternoon. With a couple of the crew starting to feel a little green around the gills, we pointed the boat back toward shore a bit early.
All in all it was a fantastic day — great turnout, good fish caught, plenty of laughs, and another successful Ladies Competition done and dusted.
Hope to see all these ladies out on boats at the Easter Fish Hunt in a few weeks
Bring on the next one! 🎣
